Site of Takatori Castle: the Best Montain Castle of Japan

This mountain castle, constructed atop the 583.9 meter elevation Mt. Takatori, is one of the 100 most famous castles of Japan. Today only its stone walls remain, but the scale is vast. It boasts the largest dimensions for mountain castles in Japan.

高取城跡

This castle is said to have been constructed by the Ochi clan during the Northern and Southern Courts Period. Subsequently, large-scale alterations were made on the orders of Toyotomi Hidenaga, lord of the Yamato Koriyama castle. In addition to serving as a mountaintop fortress, retainers' residences and other facilities were also included, and it became vast in scale. Strengthened by rows upon rows of stone walls and dry moats, it was truly impregnable.
But as concern for fighting waned in the Edo period, the castle lord and his retainers came down from the mountain, and the Tosa road began to prosper as a castle town. While conditions of the castle thus changed, until its abandonment in the Meiji period it served as castle to an unusually long series of 14 daimyo.
